Understanding the 3 Most Important Interviewing Goals for Careers in Mining

Posted on by admin

Having a better understanding of why interviews in the mining industry are done gives you some directions & guidance on how to best prepare for them, in this post we will cover the top 3 goals for interviews of careers in mining and some extra tips for preparing yourself.

The first goal is to sell yourself, meaning clearly demonstrate to the potential mining organization/company you are applying for how your mining experience, knowledge and accomplishments match the qualities and skills they are seeking.

The second goal to understand is to persuade the interviewer that you will “fit in” this mining industry and contribute to the needs of the organization/company and the position.

And finally the third goal is to establish if the position will help you succeed within this industry and if the organization/company will provide you with opportunities for growth and development with your career in mining.  The best way you can accomplish this is by preparing yourself prior to the interview by gathering as much information as possible that will help you decide.

In addition to understanding the 3 most important interviewing goals, clarify some details on the logistics of the interview can help you alive your nervousness. Some things to consider when you receive the call for an interview that can help you be better prepared are to politely request the following information:

  • Time, date, location and confirm the specific job
  • Name(s) and position(s) of the interviewer(s)
  • Detailed job description (if you do not already have one)
  • Contact number in the event you need to contact the organization/company
  • Number of candidates being interviewed (optional)

Once you agree to the interview, follow through with that commitment. Nothing can be more frustrating to an employer than to have a candidate fail to show up for an interview. Not only have you wasted the employer’s time, but your reputation.

For whatever reason if you have to cancel an interview, do so as quickly as you can, giving them a brief explanation for this decision. Did you know that cancelling an interview within 24 hours can leave the same impression as not showing up, so unless it’s impossible to show up make sure to give proper notice? Employers may not be able to change their schedule, if flights are involved for example, and there may not be enough time to fill the void with another candidate.

In the case that you accepted another position, call the employer and follow up with a brief note explaining your decision and thanking them for considering your application. This small act of professionalism may help leave a more positive impression of you, should you have to approach this employer in the future.

But things do happen and if you are in a scenario that you have to cancel an interview for some unforeseen circumstance, let the employer know as soon as possible and make the effort to reschedule the interview for another time. As something like this can have the employers wonder about your motives for applying and initially accepting an interview if there is not an effort made to explain or to reschedule your time.
